ANOTHER DAY IN THE MAGICAL LAND OF DAVAO May 28, 2023May 28, 2023 I love all kinds of surprises (tongue-in-cheek) but never imagined one of those magical discoveries involved a life-sustaining element. . .WATER. Apparently. . .it is actually possible to run out of water? Yes. In fact, daily. The powers-that-be control and limit water access and thereby, when the meter stops so does the flow. Oh, but never fear, though you may be waterless for the entire day, it is replenished around midnight, and if you are able to keep your eyes open long enough—the water arrives from the “city” and you MAY shower. Nuff said. Most of us are tethered (somewhat) to our “cellular” appliance or instrument-of-distraction, and when said communication is thwarted, we (Rick) takes immediate action. Plainly, we have no cell reception with our current US phone numbers. Before I know it, we were madly hailing a taxi to the nearest cell phone accessory provider begging for a solution to our insurmountable issue. Turns out, the “simple” solution landed us in a GINORMOUS mall, on the third level, where we bought our SIM cards. Check. Nope. Not realizing the actual purchasing of the cards precipitated the opening of Pandora’s Box, we were then instructed to head towards the Smart self-provider store. I have absolutely NO idea what all of this means, and do not really care, but we enter the establishment. I might have had a change of heart and attitude when I am whisked to the corner where there are complementary scoops of several gelato flavors (yes, you can choose two or more flavors) can be ours—free because “we might have to wait.” Well glory be! We do not wait and while we are not waiting we are slugging down our gelato cups while three kind, and gracious agents get to work on our phones. Here’s the catch—the freebee prepares you for a VERY LONG wait while our phones are updated. (Like your mama said “nothing is free!”). But it’s not over. We thank the kind, gracious employees for their generosity, willingness to work on our phones for a very long time. Phew. We said our good-byes and their tag line goes something like this, “in order to access the “5G—11GB Free Data plus Calls & Texts to ALL,” you need to go somewhere to load some time on your SIM card” in order to cash in on all the freebies we have just paid for (something is wrong here). We find a “loader,” and for a price, our phones are loaded. I have no words—or maybe I do. On a serious note, we are re-learning that ordinary tasks which occur in daily life in the states are typically mega complicated abroad. This frankly makes sense. Let’s begin by saying I could never get enough sleep to make me beautiful. In fact, because I don’t sleep enough is likely the reason I look the way I do. Regarding your water issue, I know a guy you might know. His name is Rick and he has a bag full of instruments to help you dig your own well so you can continue to take those long showers so you don’t STANK (if you can use the word NUFF, i can use STANK……. Nuff said). Glad you guys got your phone situation resolved at the local mall (and got gelato for your effort). I didn’t see the food court in the photo…..Miss you guys and continue to pray for HIS plan to use both of you for HIS Kingdom purposes…..”Reply
